An interview with actor Serag Al-Jazzar to talk about theater

Theater is the foundation of the arts and is the beginning of any theatrical actor. In order to know more about the role of theater in establishing the artist, we have with us the theater actor Serag Al-Jazzar. Welcome.

1 )What does theater represent to you?

Theater represents a big thing in my life for me. When I stand on stage, I express my thoughts, my ambitions, and the things that I love. I have a lot of fun while on stage, so it is the thing I love most in the world.

2 )Why did you choose to act in theatre?

Because if a strong actor wants to practice the basics of acting, his beginning must be theater, and after that he will be able to appear professionally in cinema and drama, where theater has the actor’s tools for you, as there is no opportunity for repetition in theater, unlike television and cinema, and you are also confronted with... The audience directly, so this gains you more confidence

3 )What is your first artistic work?

My first work was the play The Basement, which was based on the novel The Land of Zikola

4 )How was this work behind the scenes?

This play was facing many problems, as we settled on this novel with difficulty because we were participating in the Theatrical Discovery Festival, so we wanted to present more of what was unique to us, so we worked on creating a theatrical script for the novel to transform it into a theatrical form, and there were many problems, such as the absence of some actors. Regarding the rehearsals and also the role of the director’s assistants, they were not working professionally, and there were also problems with the actors entering the stage, as some of the actors were forgetting the time of their entry to the stage, but we tried as much as possible to not show this to the audience.

5 )What challenges did you face as a theater actor?

The most prominent challenges were facing the audience, as there is fear of the audience at the beginning, as it is difficult to speak in front of 200 people who focus on you and want you to provide them with good content. This places a degree of responsibility on you, but this pressure disappears when the audience applauds you when you enter the stage.

6 )What future steps do you want to take in the field of art?

I want to participate in state-affiliated festivals or strong festivals, such as the National Theater Festival and the Afaq Festival by Professor Hisham El-Sunbati, and try to present plays that convey a message and have a goal.

7 )Did you have an experience at the Discovery Theater Festival? What was that experience like?

The experience gained from this theater festival was if there were rules and laws that we follow at the festival, as we do not offer a free play and we have an expansion of time, on the contrary, we had a shortage of time, where we have only one hour and also committed to the type of play, where we do not offer a play with a political or religious thought , the most thing I gained from the festival is the comment and advice of the jury

8) What is the role of social media in the theater ?

The role of social media in the theater is a very important role, as we were using social media to promote our plays and publish special posters for performances, and this is to invite audiences to attend our performances, we were also publishing in order to reach directors and actors, and this is to benefit from their experiences and criticism and invite them to help us

9 ) What is the reason for the deterioration of the theater in Egypt?

The main reason for the deterioration of theater in Egypt, from my point of view, is the lack of interest. In the past, people were interested in theater and were waiting for it, and artists used to give their best in theatre. Today, some artists and movie stars do not care about theater, as they combine more than one play in order to present it. Our propaganda, Shaw, and these plays are undoubtedly substandard

10) At the end of the conversation, what advice would you like to give to artists who want to experiment?

I would like to advise them not to be led by anyone, as there are some people and amateur artists who do not have experience in theatre, and their only goal is to collect money. They attract some people who want to experience acting, and they tell them, “Let’s produce a play,” and it may not happen. The production of the play from the ground up, so I advise them to perform in theatrical groups affiliated with the state or trusted theatrical groups and not to be led by anyone or any fraudulent person.
